New research has just found a major breakthrough to understanding sudden infant death syndrome.
Australian researchers have connected SIDS to low levels of a brain protein which regulates sleep arousal.
The researchers have found evidence that babies who die from SIDS have low levels of orexin, a brain protein that regulates sleep arousal, according to the telegraph UK.
Dr Rita Machaalani told the paper that the next step will be to identify the ideal levels of orexin for a baby's brain and develop a diagnostic tool to help prevent SIDS.
