Rescue of 84 Great Danes at NH puppy mill leaves humane society looking for donations

WOLFEBORO — Donations to The Humane Society of the United States helped ease the rescue of 84 Great Danes from a suspected New Hampshire puppy mill.

"The kindness of supporters like you made the rescue of these large breed dogs possible," The HSUS said.

The Wolfeboro Police Department served search and seizure and arrest warrants for the Wolfeboro mansion property Friday after an initial investigation on May 8 revealed the massive dogs living in unsanitary conditions with limited access to food and water.

"I’ve never seen conditions this bad in more than 21 years of law enforcement. Words cannot describe the absolute abhorrent conditions these animals were living in," said Chief Dean Rondeau of the Wolfeboro Police Department.

The HSUS safely transported the animals to a temporary emergency animal shelter at an undisclosed location. The dogs are being thoroughly examined by a team of veterinarians and will receive any necessary immediate medical treatment.

Ongoing care for these Great Danes will require many resources, so The HSUS is asking the public to donate to their Animal Rescue Team.

Donations will be used to:

  • Provide a fully-equipped response team to rescue and care for animals
  • Provide assistance to local communities and law enforcement during incidents of animal cruelty
  • Fund an investigation unit to help shut down illegal animal operations such as puppy mills
  • Train law enforcement and prosecutors nationwide on taking action against criminals who harm animals
  • Fund and promote a reward fund that provides $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of animal abusers

NH1 News has reached out to The HSUS on how to adopt these rescued dogs and is awaiting a response.
