Rescue of 2 injured hikers underway on Mount Hood

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The Clackamas County sheriff's office says a rescue operation is under way on Mount Hood after two climbers were injured.

Deputy Ben Frazier says the climbers were injured early Saturday near an area on the mountain known as the Hogsback. A call for help was received at about 11 a.m.

Frazier says one climber has a suspected broken femur and hip, but the second climber's injuries are not known. A third climber, who is also with them, is not injured.

The climbers were on the popular south-side climbing route. Frazier said he did not know how they became injured.

An Oregon National Guard helicopter has been requested to airlift them off the mountain.

Members of Portland Mountain Rescue, a volunteer search and rescue group, are also helping the climbers.
