DURHAM — The University of New Hampshire in Durham had almost double the reported rapes from 2014 to 2015 and it has most likely been attributable to better reporting of the crimes, rather than higher instances, according to police.
UNH went from 24 reported rapes in 2014 to 40 in 2015, according to the school's federally mandated security report, The Concord Monitor reported.
The school and its' Sexual Harassment & Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP) have done a large amount of work in training faculty and staff and spreading awareness of the issue across campus, the UNH Police Chief Paul Dean told the Concord Monitor.
The Clery Art, which was signed into law in 1990, requires colleges and universities to publish an annual report by October 1, which contains three years of crime statistics. SHARPP told the Concord Monitor that the numbers do not fully reflect the true history of this issue and that anonymous survey's typically show higher numbers.
There is still a great deal of controversy regarding this issue, how to handle it, and the issue of statistics based on the stigma around the crime itself.
The Crisis Center of Central New Hampshire’s confidential hotline number is 866-841-6229. UNH SHARPP’s toll-free hotline, available to anyone in the UNH community, is 888-271-7233.
