Report warns of opioid addicts dying from taking too much Imodium to self-treat addiction
New data shows over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medications are being abused by people attempting to self-treat their opioid addiction.
WKYC-TV reports two published case studies in the Annals of Emergency Medicine showed patients with substance abuse trying to self-treat their addiction with Imodium. Both patients died and toxicology reports showed high levels of loperamide - a key ingredient used in Imodium to treat diarrhea.
Doctors warned health care providers to be aware of increasing loperamide abuse and its under recognized cardiac toxicity.
