Red Sox great David Ortiz expected to announce retirement effective after 2016 season

BOSTON – Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will retire after the 2016 season, according to ESPN.

Multiple media outlets began reporting Big Papi will officially announce the news on Wednesday – which is his 40th birthday.

According to ESPN, only 10 position plays older than 40 have played for the Red Sox: Carl Yastrzemski, Ted Williams and Bing Miller. If all works out for the slugger, Ortiz will be the 11th.
