Red Sox fans flock to Fenway Park for home opener
BOSTON - It was the day Red Sox fans have been waiting for all year. The first Red Sox home game of the season.
"It's definitely an unofficial holiday. For us it is," said Red Sox fan Leigh Gerow.
Baseball season started last week. But in Boston it doesn't officially start until the first game at Fenway Park. And the weather was a big hit at Yawkey Way.
"We actually packed a bunch of sweaters, handwarmers, beanies and we actually don't need any of that. Maybe I'll return it when I get back to San Antonio," said Red Sox fan Tim Urenda.
Many made the trip down from New Hampshire for Monday's game, including two from Manchester who were here for a special reason.
"Our grandfather passed away and we're here to honor his memory because he wanted to come to the game," said Red Sox fan Kenneth Wood.
A few Washington fans were also at Monday's game, but no sign of the rival Yankee team. Yawkey Way was packed as Red Sox fans got to the ballpark early for the game.
"We plan this day off every year. To be here in Boston to have the sun shining to be in the environment of all these people who love the city, can't ask for more," said Gerow.
After a tough finish last year fans have high hopes for 2015.
"Hopefully they do good. I say first place, championship. We'll see," said Red Sox fan Joe Fusco.
The Red Sox won their home opener 9-4. They play Washington again Tuesday at 6:10 p.m.
