Rate of homelessness in Portsmouth schools is increasing, new statistics show

PORTSMOUTH — The rate of homeless students attending city schools is increasing, according to statistics released by the Portsmouth School Department.

There were 30 homeless students in city schools as of Oct. 20, as opposed to 25 homeless students as of Dec. 1, 2015, when school districts are required to complete their official counts, based on information compiled by Jeanette Souther, director of pupil support and instruction for city schools.
