PTSD Awareness day is designed to raise awareness for treatment options

June 27 is PTSD Awareness Day and many people are doing their part to spread the word and raise awareness about PTSD treatments.

Beginning in 2010, congress named June 27 PTSD Awareness Day and in 2014 the Senate designated the month of June for National PTSD Awareness.

"After a traumatic event, most people have painful memories. For many people, the effects of the event fade over time. But for others, the memories, thoughts and feelings don't go away - even months or years after the event is over," the National Center for PTSD website read.

Mental health experts are not sure why some people develop PTSD while others don't.

The purpose of the month is to encourage everyone to raise public awareness of effective treatments.
