Program offers financial assistance for veteran home repairs

The Associated Press

BEDFORD — A new program offers New Hampshire veterans financial assistance for home repairs or accessibility improvements.

Hammers for Veterans is a project led by the New Hampshire Home Builder's Association. It recently received $25,000 from New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, a public benefit corporation that offers rental and homeownership programs for low- and moderate-income people.

The goal of Hammers for Veterans is to raise funds to provide professional home construction services. The program was started after builders noticed some veterans need things like a wheelchair ramp, wider doors or the removal of barriers in their home.

Others just need home repair that is out of their reach.

The program provides guidance through the construction bidding process and manages construction activity. It's also funded by the annual Hammers for Veterans auction.
