'Pro-rape' group plans meeting in Portsmouth, police alerted

PORTSMOUTH - Police say they have been receiving messages on social media over the past few days about a radical group calling itself Return of Kings that claims it is "pro-rape."

The self-proclaimed "neomasculine" men's group had been organizing a meeting for Saturday in Market Square, offering to give advice on how to seduce women and saying they support rape on private property.

The online announcement alarmed some members of the community. Police said they were notified about the group's meeting, but the choice of venue is not illegal.

"We might not agree with their standpoints whatsoever, from a police standpoint, but they can be there. We, in fact, made sure officers were aware they would be there and we said: monitor the situation and monitor their presence," said Deputy Chief Frank Warchol.

Police say they've been monitoring the group's website in the days leading up to the Saturday meeting and were notified Thursday that the group had canceled the meet up. However, police plan to be on patrol in the area as part of their routine.
