Preventing forest fires tough after Belmont Fire Department Smokey Bear signs stolen

NH1.com

BELMONT - The Belmont Fire Department is looking for its missing fire danger signs.

One of the signs disappeared a few nights ago. A day or two later, a caller to police said they saw someone walking down the road with a sign.

This morning, when fire crews arrived at the station, they found all the signs had been taken. There are 10 signs in all, two for each fire danger classification.

This is the first year the department has had a Smokey Bear fire danger sign since its last one was removed four or five years ago, according to the department.

The firefighters just want their signs back and don’t plan on pressing any charges. They also have started a hashtag campaign: #bringbacksmokeysigns.

Anyone who has information can call the Belmont police at 603-267-8351.
