President Trump to nominate Scott Brown as ambassador to New Zealand

CONCORD – Former U.S. Sen. Scott Brown may soon be headed to other side of the world.

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced his intention to nominate Brown as U.S. ambassador to New Zealand. The Rye resident’s nomination would need confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Brown told NH1 News that he can’t comment until he’s officially nominated by the President.

The Republican state lawmaker in Massachusetts gained national attention in January 2010 with his victory in a special Senate election to serve the final three years of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's term. He was defeated in his 2012 re-election bid by Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren.

Warren tweeted her support for Brown's nomination

Brown moved his residency to the Granite State three and a half years ago before launching a Senate run in New Hampshire in 2014. Brown narrowly lost to incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.

Shaheen, in a tweet, also supported the nomination.

Even though Brown's lived in New Hampshire since late 2013, in the statement from the White House, the former senator is referred to as "Scott Brown of Massachusetts."

Last year, just days before New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary, Brown endorsed Trump’s bid for the GOP nomination. He introduced Trump later that evening at a large rally in Milford. Trump easily topped a large Republican field in the Feb. 9 primary, launching him towards the nomination and eventually the White House.

Brown appeared at a couple of Trump rallies in the Granite State during last autumn’s general election.

Brown served 35 years in the Army National Guard and during the presidential transition he was in contention to become VA secretary, but Trump eventually nominated David Shulkin.

Brown, who is a Fox News contributor, is married to former NH1 News contributing correspondent Gail Huff.
