Powerful storm begins to pound Northern California

The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Heavy rain is falling north of San Francisco as a major Pacific storm pushes into California.

The National Weather Service says 4 inches of rain has been reported in Sonoma County, and flood warnings are in effect early Thursday for points along the Russian and Navarro rivers in Mendocino County and the Eel River in Humboldt County.

Some tree damage and roadway flooding is reported in the region.

Forecasters say the rain is expected to move across San Francisco Bay through midday and south to the Monterey Bay region. Southern California will begin feeling the storm's effects later in the day.
