Portsmouth traffic snagged after several car accidents blamed on black ice on bridges

PORTSMOUTH — As many woke up to find ice on their vehicles Wednesday morning, police responded to several car accidents on two separate Portsmouth bridges.

At 5:33 a.m. police were called to multiple car accidents on Portsmouth's Sarah Long Bridge that was found to be covered in black ice. The bridge then shut down for a half an hour as crews worked quickly to clear the scene, where the bridge was reopened again around 6:30 a.m.

Police also responded to several accidents on the Piscataqua River Bridge during the same time frame. No road or lane closures affected this bridge.

Thankfully, all of the accidents were minor and there were no injuries.
