Portsmouth police warn of 'smash and grab' thefts from parked cars

PORTSMOUTH - Police are warning local residents about a recent rash of "smash and grab" thefts and are reminding people not to leave anything of value in a parked car.

Police say most of the thefts thus far have been reported in Massachusetts and southern N.H. but that these incidents are moving toward the Seacoast.

Most of the thefts have occurred in the parking lots of fitness centers, daycares and supermarkets during all hours of the day and night.

Anyone with information regarding the thefts is asked to contact Portsmouth police at 427-1500. Anyone who witnesses a theft in progress can call 436-2145, or dial 911.
