Portsmouth law enforcement partners with autism center to better prepare police
PORTSMOUTH — Police are meeting with an autism center to work on ways of de-escalating possible risks that could come with encountering someone on the spectrum during an emergency.
The Greengard Center for Autism is partnering with police to create a voluntary database of people this would affect, reports the Union Leader.
Families and citizens who volunteered to be in the database filled out forms and had photos taken on Friday and Saturday morning.
Sgt. Eric Kinsman said that officers are also learning how to recognize people with autism, which will protect police and citizens during a high-pressure situation.
