Portsmouth Herald columnist to answer questions about Muslim faith

Robert Azzi is a columnist for the Portsmouth Herald. A practicing Muslim, he writes intellectually provocative pieces on religion, politics, and culture. Sometimes he upsets his readers, but Azzi says that’s part of the process in educating Americans about Muslims.

“Many Muslims have gone underground,” Azzi tells NH1 News.

Azzi doesn’t want to be silent. He wants to speak out. Since last year, he’s has been traveling around New Hampshire visiting churches, libraries, and community centers, holding forums that he calls “Ask a Muslim Anything”. He says no topic is too controversial or too political for him to answer.

“I’m not here to speak to the choir,” he explained, while sitting in the Rye Public Library where he’ll be answering questions on May 12.

At previous forums, many of the questions have been about Islam.

“Christians have a hard time with Jesus as a prophet, and not the son of God. We don’t believe he’s the son of God,” said Azzi.

He says he gets a lot of threatening and nasty e-mails for expressing his views.

This political season has been challenging, Azzi says, and he wants Americans to have correct information about Islam, so they don’t rely on false narratives that, he says, can be perpetuated by the media.
