Portsmouth firefighters selling T-shirts for cancer research
PORTSMOUTH — Local firefighters are wearing and selling T-shirts this month in order to raise awareness and help raise funds for cancer research in response to fellow firefighter deaths.
Sarah Fox and Jeff Bokum, both prior members of the Portsmouth Fire Department, both passed away from cancer in the last five years. In response to these deaths, the fire department has taken it upon themselves to bring awareness to the cancer-causing chemicals that firefighters are exposed to on a regular basis. Their mission is to make fellow firefighters aware of occupational hazards linked to cancers, according to Seacoastonline.
Firefighters this year are strutting a new look. Instead of the pink shirts they normally sport in October, they are wearing blue shirts with a pink logo on them.
The public is welcome to join their efforts by purchasing a t-shirt at either one of the two Portsmouth fire stations, at 3010 Lafayette Road and 170 Court St.
The T-shirts are for sale for $20, while they are also selling long-sleeve T-shirts for $22, and hoodies for $45. Half of the proceeds will go to the Susan Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. The other half of the proceeds will go to the Firefighters Cancer Support Network.
