Portsmouth considering parking permits for reserved spaces
PORTSMOUTH - Parking problems continue to cause aggravation downtown - now city officials are introducing a new controversy.
The city is considering issuing permits for reserved spaces. Not all residents approve of the idea.
Portsmouth is already looking at building a new parking garage. But some residents say that drivers aren't going to spend the money at the garage and will instead park in nearby side streets.
Currently there is only one parking garage in the downtown area, and many people think a second garage is a good idea.
“It would bring in more people, yeah, but also it depends how big they’re gonna do it, and where they’re gonna do it. I think parking permits are outrageous. Especially for the businesses,” said Betty Stanley.
City officials continue to review the idea of parking permits and reserved spaces.
