RYE — Police say speed and alcohol were involved in an accident where a sport utility vehicle flipped and burst into flames on Brackett Road. Meanwhile the driver allegedly ran from the scene, leaving an injured passenger behind shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

According to Seacoastonline.com, Cody Lowe, 21, of 22 Fern Ave., Rye, has been charged with conduct after an accident and reckless operation.

Police say the Nissan Pathfinder he was driving crashed on Brackett Road near Parsons Road. When paramedics arrived, they found the passenger on the ground with serious injuries and the driver missing. The passenger was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital and then flown to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. Firefighters put out the vehicle fire.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicated speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

Police got help from neighboring police departments and a state police K-9 team as they searched for the driver. He later turned himself in on a warrant.

Lowe was released on $30,000 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 7 in Portsmouth Circuit Court.
