Police: Portsmouth man 'targeted escorts' on social media
PORTSMOUTH - A city man was arraigned Wednesday on more than a dozen felony and misdemeanor charges after police said he assaulted multiple women he met online.
James Banks, of 107 Richards Ave., Portsmouth, is facing four counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault, two counts of second degree assault (by strangulation), one count of kidnapping, two counts of criminal restraint and one count of possession of drugs (cocaine) with intent to distribute.
He's also facing five misdemeanor level charges, including two counts of false imprisonment, simple assault, criminal threatening and obstructing report of crime.
Police said Banks was targeting escorts through the social media site Backpage.com.
He would then allegedly arrange to meet them in person in Portsmouth, where he later victimized each woman, police said. Bail was set at $150,000 cash.
Banks will be back in court for a probable cause hearing on Tuesday, April 14.
