Police: New England teen distracted using cellphone causes 10-car pileup
YORK, Maine — A distracted 17-year-old driver has been cited after causing a 10-car crash on Thursday, sending four people to the hospital.
Police have charged the girl, who they are not naming because she is a minor, with two civil infractions: a red light violation and an interim license violation for someone under 18 using a cellphone, according to Seacoastonline.
The teen was allegedly stopped at a red light when she was using her cellphone and she began to travel back into the intersection while the light was still red. A dump truck traveling southbound swerved to avoid her car, partially hitting her, then skidding into the northbound lane, sending dirt everywhere, eventually landing on its' side.
The accident involved 10 vehicles, 9 cars and one motorcycle, and only four people were treated for non-life threatening injuries, another 10 denied treatment, Seacoast reports.
Officials and witnesses who were on the scene have expressed shock that no one was more seriously injured. An impromptu coffee stand was set up by Stonewall Kitchen while the clean-up was taking place.
