Police: Man stole from tip jar at New England Subway, dropped heroin on way out

LOWELL, Mass. — Police are searching for the person responsible for stealing money from a New England Subway, who then returned to retrieve an object he dropped that allegedly appeared to be heroin.

The incident was caught on the Subway's surveillance camera. Police say the video shows the man removing money from the tip jar located next to the register and leaving the store. A customer saw the incident and told the clerk. The clerk then went to look for the man when she found a small baggie on the floor, which she presumed to be heroin.

Later, the suspect allegedly returned to demand that the clerk return the small baggie to him. When she refused the suspect grabbed the woman's arm, but she was able to escape and call the police.

The suspect is described as a white male, with dark hair that is long on top and short on the sides, khaki pants, white T-shirt, and he was wearing black backpack with rope-style straps. He is wanted for larceny from a building, assault, and battery.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lowell Police Department at 978-937-3200 or Criminal Investigation Section at 978-674-4501.
