Police: Man facing DUI charge in rollover crash told fake story that car was stolen
PELHAM — A man charged with driving under the influence after getting in a single-car crash first tried to claim his car was stolen, police said.
Police responded to a 911 call on Wednesday night where there was a single car crash at the intersection of Dutton Road and South Shore Drive.
The gold 2005 Ford Escape was rolled on its side in the middle of the road, and a witness told police that they saw a man crawl out of the car and run down South Shore Drive before the officers arrived on scene.
The car is registered to 31-year-old Brian Gervais of Pelham. He called the police and told them that someone stole his car and he chased the suspect into the woods. He claimed that the thief punched him in the face and ran away.
Gervias was interviewed by police and his story was inconsistent with witness statements.
Gervais was eventually charged with driving under the influence, conduct after an accident and false reports to law enforcement.
He was released to the custody of a sober adult on $2,000 personal recognizance bail.
He will be arraigned on June 27.
