Police looking for man who snatched elderly womans' purse in Manchester


MANCHESTER — Police are searching for a man that allegedly ran up to an elderly woman, stole her purse, and ran away on Monday at about 2:45 p.m.

Janet Frost, 82, was "conducting business" at the Market Basket Service Desk at 460 Elm Street when she placed her purse into the shopping cart she was using before exiting the store. While she did this, Matthew Emerson, 45, of Old Town Road Hill, allegedly grabbed the purse out of the cart and ran off. Witnesses tried to chase the suspect, but lost sight of him in the Valley Street Cemetery.

The suspect is known for previous allegations of theft based on the manager's statements. The manager claims Emerson has tried to return meat products that he has stolen earlier in order to deceive the store.

The stores security footage and identity information provided by the manager led officers to positively identify the suspect as Emerson. Emerson is wanted to theft by deception, theft, and falsifying physical evidence, all felonies.
