Police looking for armed gunman after brutal Lakes Region assault
LACONIA - Police are telling shoppers to be vigilant after two women were brutally assaulted and robbed at gunpoint by a man near the Belmont Mall Monday night.
Police said the two women walked from the Belknap Mall to a popular trail along Lake Winnisquam Monday night. The victims told police a man approached them, showed them a gun and attacked them. One of the women suffered a head injury and had to be flown to a local hospital for treatment.
The man was described as 5 foot 6 inches tall, average weight, with a brown goatee and mustache. He was wearing jeans, a black sweatshirt, black gloves and a blue-collared jacket. He made off with a purse, a passport, and an ID.
The incident has many people in the area on edge.
“I’m from here, so I don’t go down there," said Tianna Finny of Northfield. "I know what’s down there.”
When asked if she feels the need to carry anything to protect herself, she told NH1 News “I carry a pocket knife.”
Finny also said she never shops in the area alone and will only shop in a group after hearing of Monday's assault.
Ginny Sanborn was walking along the same trail with her dog Lucky this morning, a walk she takes several times a day. She was walking there Monday night and saw police and the ambulance at the scene.
“I hope the women are OK and that he doesn’t do it again,” Sanborn said.
She said she's never had an issue walking the trails.
“I mean, up until now it’s been peaceful,” said Sanborn.
Laconia Police are asking anyone with information to call them at (603) 524-5252.
