Police: Crying man trying to steal woman's phone thwarted by punch
MANCHESTER — A woman was checking on the welfare of a crying man when she suddenly had to fight him off, police said.
At 5:25 p.m. Monday night, Manchester police responded to the corner of Union and Hanover streets to the report of an attempted robbery.
A woman had been walking her dogs when she saw a man resting on a wall crying. She stopped to see if she could help when the man stood up and gave her a "weird" look, police said.
She felt threatened and attempted to take out her phone to call the police. The man, later identified as Michael Guyette, 47, of Manchester, grabbed her phone and tried to run off, police said. The victim punched Guyette in the temple causing him to drop the phone, police said. She then called the police.
A few minutes later an officer saw Guyette on Pine Street, arrested him and charged him with robbery.
Guyette was scheduled to appear in Manchester district court Wednesday.
