ROCHESTER - A popular Rochester band member died Tuesday after being assaulted in the parking lot of a local sports bar.
Police confirmed that "bang n jane" band member James Unfonak died after being badly beaten following a scuffle inside Gary's Sports Bar.
The music scene in Rochester is described to be tight-knit, where everybody knows everybody.
“Just surprised that it was him," said Chuck Dunn of Michael Charles Music. "Just really sad, and it’s kind of a crazy thing.”
Dunn owns the only music shop in town, and if you play an instrument, you're sure to know him.
“He was always a pretty happy guy when I saw him," Dunn said. "He’d come in and we’d joke around. Just surprised it was him but not really surprised. I mean these days in Rochester or this area, it’s not that great."
Police can't confirm the circumstances centered around the bar fight that ultimately lead to the drummer’s death, and police did not comment in regards to drugs, alcohol or gang violence.
“We have been called to the establishment over the past years, so we have responded there prior,” said Capt. Gary Boudreau of Rochester Police.
Unfonak’s family was unable to bring themselves to speak with NH1 News, but the band’s lead singer, Mike, was clearly upset.
He said they won’t perform in the wake of their loss.
“I can’t imagine being in the band, and going on after that,” Dunn said.
No arrests have been made yet, but police are gaining confidence in their investigation.
“We know the players and individuals in this," Boudreau said. "We believe we’ve identified everybody that was involved through talking with people. You talk with someone and they give you a name, and you’re constantly interviewing several people."
Police said they don’t foresee themselves releasing any surveillance video or images of the persons of interest.
Unfonak's family is working on his services.
