Police commit to safety in national night out against crime in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH - The National Night Out against crime is happening in nearly 20 different neighborhoods, and officials say they’re dedicated to making sure every resident who participates tonight feels safe.

The night out against crime is a national event that started more than 30 years ago to try and build relationships between police and the communities they serve. Now recently we’ve seen departments across the country being attacked while on duty.

By participating in national night out, Portsmouth police said they’re taking an opportunity to meet residents during a time of celebration, not a time of need. More than that, they said there’s no reason why resident’s tonight shouldn’t feel safe.
