Police charge dad of 4- and 5-year-old children after he's found 'staggering' down NH street
MANCHESTER — A father has been charged after police said he abandoned his children at a pizza parlor and took off "staggering" down the street.
Police responded to a call at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at Alley Cat Pizzeria about a man who appeared to be intoxicated an on drugs. Witnesses told police that a man had been walking "at a brisk pace" on Chestnut Street from Bridge Street with two young children who were attempting to keep up with him.
The witnesses took the children into the restaurant out of concern for their safety.
Police found a man, later identified at Vito Paulino, 40, of Manchester, "staggering" down Union and Hanover streets a short time later. Police said he appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
Police said he gave a false name at first before giving them his real name.
Paulino had an outstanding warrant out of Hillsborough County and was taken into custody without incident, police said. He also is charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said Paulino is the father of the 4-year-old boy and 5-year-old girl who were with him and they are now in the care of another family member.
Paulino was arraigned in Manchester district court on Monday.
