PELHAM — Police and animal control officers are on the lookout for more than a dozen dogs related to Tuesday's discovery of nearly 20 abused dogs from a Pelham home.
An ongoing investigation led police to a house at 31 Johnson Road belonging to Kevin Rocheville. Police said the investigation began two weeks ago.
"It originated with a running at large complaint with a dog had followed a walker down the street and made them uncomfortable," said Allison Caprigno, who is the Animal Control Officer for the Pelham police department.
Caprigno said when she visited the home to follow up on that complaint, she knew something was wrong.
"The smell is what hit you first strong ammonia smell... like I said there was fesces on the floor. Urine on the floor - just not fresh," said Caprigno.
Pelham police with the help of other local departments raided the house finding 18 dogs and puppies, however, they believe as many as 15 more dogs could be roaming around town.
"The information that we got there was 30-40 dogs," Caprigno said. "There's definitely some missing dogs according to the list of dogs we have. I think we're missing mainly pit bulls but again it's hard to say at this point."
Neighbors who didn't want to go on camera said they thought Rocheville was involved with rescue dogs and are shocked to learn about the horrific living conditions. Others were reluctant to comment.
"I don't really want to talk about it" said a neighbor who lives across the street from Rocheville.
The dogs that were taken are staying at the animal control shelters. Rocheville could face neglect and animal cruelty charges. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at (603) 635 -2411 or email@example.com or contact your local police department. This is still under investigation.
