Pittsfield to stop enforcing youth curfew after 9 p.m.

The Associated Press

PITTSFIELD — Officials in town have decided to stop enforcing a youth curfew amid the threat of potential legal action by the policy's opponents.

The Concord Monitor reports Pittsfield selectmen have decided to temporarily stop enforcing a youth curfew that prohibits unaccompanied children under age 16 from roaming outside between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire recently sent letters to several municipalities with curfews, saying the provision of their ordinances is unconstitutional.

This came after Franklin's city council tried to reinstate a youth curfew in September, but backed off in the face of a potential lawsuit.

Interim Town Administrator Earle Wingate and ACLU Legal Director Gilles Bissonnette worked out an agreement to stop the curfew until a meeting in March.
