MANCHESTER - Chris Carpenter, the former pitcher and Cy Young award winner for the Cardinals, will be at the Southern N.H. University baseball field Thursday evening for a fundraiser to honor Navy Seal Blake Marston, who was killed in a training exercise last year.
Marston was a varsity baseball player at Derryfield before he joined the Navy. Students at the school have been wearing his old number on their baseball caps and working to raise money and awareness to help members of the armed forces and their families. Thursday's game is the last home game of the season for Derryfield and will honor Blake Marston.
Carpenter will be autographing t-shirts, baseball hats and baseballs that are being sold to raise money for Veterans Count, a part of the Easter Seals Military and Veterans Services. Donations will also be accepted to attend the Blake Marston Memorial Game at 6 p.m.
“Blake Marston was an inspiration to our students,” said Derryfield baseball coach Jeff Hastings. “While at Derryfield, he was a leader on and off the field and the students wanted to do something to make sure we remember his sacrifice and the sacrifice of so many people in the military who put themselves in harm’s way on behalf of our nation.”
Carpenter will be signing autographs starting at 5:30 p.m. and the game starts at 6:00 p.m. The event is open to the public.
