Pigs rescued from barn fire in Newport, scores of birds killed

Firefighters were able to revive a farm's pigs, but scores of birds were killed in a barn fire Monday.

The family farm of Valerie and William Sanborn was the scene of the blaze that destroyed a pole barn, farm equipment and killed about 100 chickens and pheasants.

The Valley News reported that firefighters lassoed the pigs one by one. An EMT revived the pigs with oxygen while a firefighter sprayed water onto their backs to cool them down

Firefighters received a call for heavy smoke in the are of Brown Road about 12:30 on Monday. They were able to rescue 7 pigs but the birds did not survive the fire, which consumed the barn.

7 area fire departments fought the fire, the cause of which is still undetermined. No firefighters were injured.
