Piano donated by Barry Manilow to go to Middle School at Parkside in Manchester

MANCHESTER — Middle school students at Parkside are getting a brand new piano this spring thanks to a donation from Barry Manilow.

The singer's charity the Manilow Music Project traditionally donates a new piano to the school districts in each of his tour locations. Manchester learned of the potential gift in March, but it was up to the school system where the piano would go.

The district launched an essay contest to decide which school -- with one of the essays spoofing Manilow's lyrics. The needs of the schools which submitted entries also were considered.

“Parkside’s band, orchestra and choir share two older-model digital keyboards, and the upright piano is in such disrepair, it can’t even be tuned anymore,” said Superintendent Debra Livingston.
