DERRY — A man led police through several towns in an allegedly stolen pickup truck and tried to hide chest-deep swamp water before a New Hampshire State Police dog and handler apprehended him Wednesday.

Police chased the suspect, eventually identified as 41-year-old Shane Collins, through several towns and eventually into Derry later in the day.

Derry police capt. Vernon Thomas said Wednesday, "One of our detectives spotted the man that fit the description that we were looking for, tried to detain him."

Thomas said police recognized the man through previous dealings with police. "Mr. Collins chose not to stop and ran into a swamp."

"He was a dangerous guy today," said New Hampshire State Police Capt. Christopher Vetter. Police described the chase and pursuit as "high-speed" and "high-risk."

Charges, said Vetter Wednesday, were "up in the air."

Collins was taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry for evaluation before being taken to the Derry Police Department to face charges.
