CONCORD (AP) — The principal of an elite New Hampshire prep school dealing with a series of sexual abuse allegations acknowledges it represents a "dark moment" but says the school will emerge from the crisis strong and healthy.

Phillips Exeter Academy Principal Lisa MacFarlane spoke to The Associated Press on Friday following revelations last month that a teacher who was forced into retirement in 2011 had admitted to two cases of sexual misconduct dating back to the 1970s and 1980s. Since the disclosure, police have received a number of reports from alumni and have investigated sexual misconduct of at least one other former faculty member.

MacFarlane praises "survivors for coming forward" and shedding light on a chapter in Exeter's history that is "painful" but necessary to look at.
