Philips Exeter principal's letter regarding another abuse investigation

April 13, 2016 Dear Academy community,

I want to share an update regarding ongoing efforts to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct.

Since March 30, when I alerted the community of sexual misconduct by a former faculty member, we have received additional claims of alleged sexual misconduct at Exeter. Each was immediately reported to the Exeter Police Department. The police have since informed us that they have concluded an investigation in which current faculty member Steve Lewis confessed to sexual encounters with a student more than two decades ago. In accordance with Exeter policy, Mr. Lewis’ employment has been terminated and he has been barred from campus and all Exeter events.

We are aware of no additional allegations involving Mr. Lewis and we continue to urge anyone with information about inappropriate sexual conduct connected to PEA to contact us or the Exeter Police Department. The Exeter Police Department has informed us that there are no investigations involving current faculty members.

The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. We remain committed to fully supporting the Exeter Police Department in its investigations, and to uncovering any other past incidents. We will take whatever steps are needed to make Exeter the safest possible place for our students. We have extensive policies, procedures, and educational offerings in place to help recognize the signs of harassment or assault, and to take appropriate action to prevent inappropriate sexual behavior. Additional resources can be found at

I appreciate the thoughtful feedback I continue to receive from the Exeter community related to these events, and I encourage you to reach out to me or Assistant Principal Ron Kim ( if you have any questions.

Sincerely, Lisa MacFarlane P'09, P'13
