Pelham police warn of powerful, deadly batch of heroin

PELHAM — Officials are warning residents of a powerful batch of heroin that's being blamed on several recent overdoses and two suspected deaths.

"There's definitely something that's taking place. It's mixed with something because we don't normally see the numbers that we're seeing right now," said Lt. Anne Perriello.

In a 24-hour period from Sunday morning until Monday morning officials were called to three overdoses, in which one person could not be revived by Narcan.

Police believe the heroin is heavily laced with a synthetic drug, like fentanyl, which is resistant to Narcan.

There is no distinctive packaging, Perriello said.

Police are actively investigating to find the source of the drug but since Pelham is in close proximity to several cities known to have drug activity, prosecution is difficult.

Officials are urging anyone who needs help to go to the Pelham Police or Fire Department. There is no official program in place but first responders said their goal is to get residents the help they need.

"If we don't help the problem it's just going to continue to get worse," Perriello said. "Then they're going to meet someone else and then they're going to start using and it's just a snowball effect. We would much rather them go get help then give them a fine."
