Patriots lead Jets 7-6 after first quarter

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) Tom Brady threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Shane Vereen on New England's fourth play and the Patriots led the New York Jets 7-6 after the first quarter Thursday night.
Nick Folk kicked field goals of 22 and 49 yards for New York after the Jets drove deep into New England territory on their first two drives.
Geno Smith completed his first five passes and was 5 for 7 for 72 yards in the quarter. He also had a 15-yard run as the Jets outgained the Patriots 137 yards to 88.
Brady completed 4 of 6 passes for 79 yards. On the toichdown, Vereen got behind the secondary and caught the ball just outside the end zone, tumbling in for the touchdown 1:29 into the first quarter.
The Jets answered with a field goal on their opening drive. Chris Ivory had four carries for 22 yards, Smith broke free for a 15-yard run and completed a 28-yard pass to Jeff Cumberland on third-and-5 to help set up Folk's 22-yarder with 6:29 left in the first.
Folk added the 49-yarder with 19 seconds left in the quarter. The Jets drove to New England's 20, but knocked themselves back with a holding penalty.
