FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to Shane Vereen, the first a 49-yarder on the fourth play of the game, and the New England Patriots led the New York Jets 20-19 after three quarters Thursday night.
The Jets kept it close with four field goals by Nick Folk in the first half and took a brief lead on Chris Ivory's 1-yard touchdown to cap the opening drive of the third quarter.
Ivory had 19 carries for 105 yards through three quarters as the Jets gained 301 yards against the Patriots' weary defense, reaching deep into New England territory on every drive before finally crossing the goal line on Ivory's 1-yard dive to give New York a 19-17 lead with 8:58 left in the third quarter.
Geno Smith completed 3 of 4 for 39 yards during the 80-yard drive, recovering from a sloppy second quarter when he was 1 of 5 for a yard.
The Patriots regained the lead on Stephen Gostkowski's second field goal of the night, a 36-yarder from 36-yards out to put New England back in front 20-19 with 4:10 left in the quarter.
Brady was 15 of 28 for 195 yards.
Folk kicked field goals on each of the Jets' first four drives to keep New York close. The Jets gained 196 yards while getting inside the 30 on each of their first four drives and inside the 10 on two. Folk salvaged each drive with field goals of 22, 47, 46 and 28 yards, staying perfect on 13 attempts this season.
The Jets were nearly down just 14-12 at halftime before a late pass-interference penalty on Antonio Allen set up the Patriots at the 12 with 23 seconds left in the half.
New England took a 15-yard penalty during a scrum when Brady was knocked to the ground after throwing the ball away and the Patriots had to settle for Gostkowski's 39-yard field goal on the last play of the half.
On Brady's first touchdown pass, Vereen got behind the secondary and caught the ball just outside the end zone, tumbling in 1:29 into the first quarter.
The second was a 3-yarder to Vereen, who helped set up the score with a 17-yard run.
New York put the pressure right back on New England when Walter Powell returned the kickoff 62 yards to the 41. New York got to the 7 before stalling again and leaving it up to Folk, who was good from 23 yards to take it 14-12 with 1:01 left in the half.
