Patriots lead 3-0 on Gostkowski's field goal

The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 22-yard field goal, and the New England Patriots had a 3-0 lead against the San Diego Chargers after one quarter on Sunday night.

The Patriots moved from their 5-yard line to the San Diego 1 on their first possession before Tom Brady threw an incompletion and then was sacked by Melvin Ingram.

Shareece Wright blocked Gostkowski's 26-yard attempt and Brandon Flowers returned it for a touchdown, but it was negated by an offside call against Wright. Gostkowski then made the 22-yarder.

LeGarrette Blount carried seven times for 39 yards on the drive.

The Patriots spent the week in San Diego after their loss at Green Bay last Sunday in order to cut down on late-season travel.

The game featured premier quarterbacks in Brady and Philip Rivers, and elite tight ends in New England's Rob Gronkowski and San Diego's Antonio Gates.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft took a helicopter to the game after watching his New England Revolution lose the MLS Cup to the LA Galaxy in Carson.
