Part of Patriot Act lapses

Heated debate over the Patriot Act pushing beyond the midnight deadline in Washington. Forcing the N-S-A to immediately stop collecting telephone metadata on millions of Americans.

This as officials also lose the ability to listen in on potential terror suspects. The house has already passed a compromise bill.

It keeps telephone data in the hands of the phone companies instead...and would require the government to seek specific warrants for access. There won't likely be a vote on final passage for several days.

And any senate changes to the house bill would have to go back to the house for consideration. Democratic senate minority leader Harry Reid blaming his republican counterpart Mitch McConnell who in an about face said passing a compromise is "the only realistic way forward."
