Parole granted for man convicted of murdering 18-month-old in Weare

CONCORD - A man who has served more than 20 years in prison for the murder of a child in Weare was up for parole today.

Shane Nickerson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the beating death of 18-month-old Zachary McMillan in 1995.

"I think about it all the time,” Nickerson said. “I don’t know why it happened either. I just don’t know why I reacted the way I did."

Nickerson, who was 23-years old at the time, was baby-sitting the toddler when he started crying. Nickerson admits he then beat the child.

"His death has hurt myself and my family," said Kristie Kirkland, the boy’s mother.

The board granted Nickerson's parole, saying they were pleased with his transition to a halfway house, ability to hold down a steady job and recommended that he still seek mental health counseling.
