Over 100 people stranded on Mount Washington road after car fire

GORHAM — There was a car fire on the Mount Washington Auto Road that stranded dozens of motorists for over an hour on Thursday afternoon, officials say.

The driver told Mount Washington officials that he was about half way up the mountain when his Audi A4 started to feel as if it was overheating. The driver kept driving and began to see smoke coming from what seemed to be the hood. When the driver and the passenger stepped out of the car they realized the underside of the car was on fire.

The incident was reported around 3:30 p.m. and officials were on the scene within 10 minutes. By the time officials reached the car, a passerby had offered the driver and his passenger a ride down the mountain.

The fire broke out in the middle of the five-mile, gravel section of the road. About 100 cars that were coming down off the mountain were blocked until normal traffic resumed. The fire was extinguished within an hour and a half.
