OSHA: NH man dies after trench collapses during construction project
ACWORTH — A New Hampshire man died while working construction in Acworth Tuesday afternoon.
Christopher Hewey, 37, from Alstead was working a construction project on Bascom Hill Road when a trench he was working in collapsed around 1 p.m. May 16.
Ted Fitzgerald, a spokesman for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), confirmed that OSHA opened an investigation Tuesday afternoon to determine if any workplace safety standards were violated in the incident. OSHA has yet to provide further details.
Fitzgerald told Keene Sentinel that OSHA inspections of trench collapses involve determining if companies took the correct safety precautions at the time an injury or fatality occurred. These precautions could include shoring up the walls of a trench with supports or using a trench box, a device designed to protect workers.
NH1 News has reached out to New Hampshire State Police and is awaiting a response.
