FRANCONIA (AP) — A memorial park that will commemorate the iconic Old Man of the Mountain landmark in New Hampshire is nearing completion.
The Caledonian Record reports the stone Profile Cottage near the shore of Profile Lake in Franconia is the latest addition and officially opened for visitors on Thursday. Local and state officials gathered Wednesday for a dedication.
The Old Man of the Mountain was a series of granite ledges resembling a face on the side of Cannon Mountain in Franconia. It was officially observed in 1805 and crumbled to the ground in 2003.
Another component of the memorial expected to be completed before the end of 2018 is a 6- to 7-ton piece of the estimated 50-ton Old Man rock that will be cut off and put by the lake shore.
