Officials: Man drowns while trying to rescue child

The Associated Press

BRISTOL (AP) — A man has drowned while trying to rescue a child who began to struggle while swimming below a waterfall.

The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol says four children were swimming below Profile Falls on the Smith River in Bristol on Monday afternoon when an 8-year-old started to struggle.

Authorities say a 39-year-old man got into the water to try to help the child, but went under and did not resurface. The other three children then all began to struggle.

Officials say people nearby entered the water and were able to pull the children out. The body of the man was later recovered in the town of Hill. Officials have not released his name.

All four children were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
