Officials ID Concord man who drowned trying to save child from Profile Falls

BRISTOL — State officials have identified the man who drowned while trying to rescue a child swimming below a waterfall.

Thai M. Chinh, 39 of Concord, died after going to help the child who began to struggle while swimming under Profile Falls on the Smith River in Bristol.

The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol said four children were swimming there Monday afternoon when an 8-year-old started to struggle.

Chinh went under and did not resurface. Officials say people nearby entered the water and were able to pull the children out.

His body was later recovered in the town of Hill.

All four children were taken to a hospital for evaluation.
